Batman actor Ben Affleck talked about the potential villain plans for Deathstroke from his now-scrapped Batman movie.
Before Matt Reeves took on the reigns of directing The Batman, Affleck originally was going to write, direct, and star in it. Not much was shared about his plans for the movie other than the villain was supposed to be Deathstroke played by Joe Manganiello .
Since then, Affleck was unable to lead a Batman-related project and The Batman then morphed into Reeves’ version that ultimately was in a separate canon from the DCEU.
Recently, at the Zack Snyder-focused Snyder Con, Affleck opened up about what he wanted from Deathstroke.
“There were a number of them that I was kind of exploring. And, the plans were to make interesting, nuanced, complex characters, in particular to the character you mentioned. I kind of feel like either you do – I’m just going to get into my own preference here – but either you do a kind of massive one villain that is so formidable you just can’t imagine how your protagonist is going to be able to overcome it. Or you have to really sort of populate kind of, you know, Injustice – these big group villains – where you have to get all these different characters.”
“Depth and Detail”
Affleck continued on about what he wanted from the character.
“So I was at the time really trying to hone in and focus on that character and get into depth and detail about it to make him seem as impressive as I felt there was the opportunity to do. That’s the only detail I have for you.”
So there you have it Affleck’s plans for Deathstroke would have been interesting, nuanced, complex, and impressive. To be honest, that is not giving a lot away. Still, you need to admire Affleck for trying to make it happen.
Deathstroke’s lead villain role is scrapped for now. However fans can catch Affleck as Batman one last time when The Flash hits theaters on June 16.
