Unstoppable Doom Patrol #2 Review

We catch up with the team as they bring in more Lazarus Storm mutants for protection, sanctuary, and possibly new members of the team. A current recruit is a young man named Worm, who has a sentient worm named Velvet that can detach from his stomach. It’s not clear if Velvet has any special abilities, but we soon learn Worm and Velvet are undercover plants for Peacemaker.

Through Worm’s grand tour of the Doom Patrol HQ, readers get a great primer on the assortment of Doom Patrol members, how the facility is run, and more. If you want a who’s who of Doom Patrol members, past and present, you’ll be satisfied with this issue.

However, a tour does not a story make. The plot is almost thin enough to be non-existent. Worm comes in, looks around, and follows Peacemaker’s orders to gather data. There’s a last-minute development with Worm that gives the comic some meat, but this issue is almost entirely world-building.

If you’re a fan of Doom Patrol or at least familiar with the lore, you’ll get nothing of value from this issue. New readers may have a better time.

As for Chris Burnham’s art, it’s fine and on-brand for Doom Patrol. The character designs are weird and occasionally grotesque. The linework for the HQ grand tour is impressively detailed, and Brian Reber’s coloring is excellent. Admittedly, this art style is not everyone’s cup of tea, but it is on-brand for Doom Patrol.
